Objectives
Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome is characterized by bouts of protracted vomiting in regular users of cannabis. We wondered whether this poorly understood condition is idiosyncratic, like motion sickness or hyperemesis gravidarum, or the predictable dose-response effect of prolonged heavy use.
MethodsAdults with an emergency department visit diagnosed as cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, near-daily use of cannabis for ≥6 months, and ≥2 episodes of severe vomiting in the previous year were age- and sex-matched to two control groups: RU controls (recreational users without vomiting), and ED controls (patients in the emergency department for an unrelated condition). Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol, and 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC concentrations in scalp hair were compared for subjects with positive urine THC.
ResultsWe obtained satisfactory hair samples from 46 subjects with positive urine THC: 16 cases (age 26.8 ± 9.2 years; 69% male), 16 RU controls and 14 ED controls. Hair cannabinoid concentrations were similar between all three groups (e.g. cases THC 220 [median; IQR 100,730] pg/mg hair, RU controls 150 [71,320] and ED controls 270 [120,560]). Only the THC:CBN ratio was different between groups, with a 2.6-fold (95%CI 1.3,5.7) lower age- and sex-adjusted ratio in cases than RU controls. Hair cannabidiol concentrations were often unquantifiably low in all subjects.
ConclusionsSimilar hair cannabinoid concentrations in recreational users with and without hyperemesis suggest that heavy use is necessary but not sufficient for hyperemesis cannabis. Our results underline the high prevalence of chronic heavy cannabis use in emergency department patients and our limited understanding of this plant's adverse effects.

Background:
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are well recognized as effective antidepressant agents but are rarely used due, in part, to the risk of hypertensive crisis following the ingestion of foods high in tyramine (“cheese reaction”). A selegiline transdermal system (STS) was developed to provide antidepressant concentrations of selegiline in the brain, while preserving the gastrointestinal monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) barrier. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of the STS 6 mg/24 hour on cardiovascular safety following the ingestion of ∼400 mg of tyramine consumed as a component of aged cheeses.
Methods:In this open-label, single-center phase I study, cardiovascular vital signs were recorded following tyramine challenges during placebo and STS 6 mg/24 hr treatment. Subjects were observed for clinical signs and symptoms of a pressor response and/or potential hypertensive crisis during and following the challenges.
Results:Ingestion of tyramine-enriched meals following 13 consecutive days of treatment with the STS 6 mg/24 hr (pharmacokinetic steady-state) produced no clinically significant changes in cardiovascular vital signs in 12 healthy adult male subjects. No evidence of a tyramine pressor effect on systolic blood pressure or evidence of hypertensive crisis occurred during the STS treatment.
Conclusion:These results suggest that STS 6 mg/24 hr may be administered without concern for dietary tyramine consumption.

It has become increasingly common for a reader to follow a URL cited in a court opinion or a law review article, only to be met with an error message because the resource has been moved from its original online address. This form of reference rot, commonly referred to as ‘linkrot’, has arisen from the disconnect between the transience of online materials and the permanence of legal citation, and will only become more prevalent as scholarly materials move online. The present paper*, written by Jonathan Zittrain, Kendra Albert and Lawrence Lessig, explores the pervasiveness of linkrot in academic and legal citations, finding that more than 70% of the URLs within the Harvard Law Review and other journals, and 50% of the URLs within United States Supreme Court opinions, do not link to the originally cited information. In light of these results, a solution is proposed for authors and editors of new scholarship that involves libraries undertaking the distributed, long-term preservation of link contents.

All fleas used in this study were collected in the field and except for Pulex irritans were cultured in the laboratory. The ten species studied were Xenopsylla cheopis, Nosopsyllus fasciatus, Orchopeas sexdentatus sexdentatus, Opisodasys-nesiotus, Megabothris abantis, Malaraeus telchinum, Diamanus montanus, Echidnophaga gallinacea, Pulex irritans and Oropsylla idahoensis.
All fleas transmitted in individual feeding studies with the exception of the latter two species, which transmitted en masse. Echidnophaga gallinacea could not be fed periodically as were the other fleas because of its tick-like feeding habits. Consequently, the vector efficiency obtained for this species is not strictly comparable to that found for the other species.
The transmission data obtained from individual flea feeding studies was analysed statistically to estimate the expected number of transmissions per flea of each species. These values are obtained as intervals which have a 90% probability of containing the true value. The true vector efficiency of Xenopsylla cheopis was found to be 0·660 ± 0·234 (expected transmissions per flea), that of Nosopsyllus fasciatus to be 0·213 ± 0·157, and that of Orchopeas sexdentatus sexdentatus to be 0·170 ± 0·138. Opisodasys nesiotus, Megabothris abantis, Malaraeus telchinum and Diamanus montanus transmitted very inefficiently.
Experimental evidence was obtained that different strains of a species of flea may differ markedly in their biological vector capacity. In contrast to results obtained in this study, Wheeler & Douglas found Diamanus montanus to be an exceptionally good vector; in their studies it proved to be an even more efficient vector than Xenopsylla cheopis. The strain of Diamanus montanus employed by them came from an area widely separated from that in which the strain used in the present studies was originally collected.
Since many blocked fleas did not transmit it is probable that the experimentally determined vector efficiencies are lower than they would be in nature, where the blocked flea has constant access to a host and hence greater opportunity to feed.
Attempts to determine the number of organisms regurgitated by a blocked flea during its attempt to feed did not prove entirely satisfactory, but gave an indication that the number may be at times from 11,000 to 24,000 organisms. The technique consisted of feeding a blocked flea on the shaved abdomen of a mouse (later on the ear), then immediately doing a biopsy on the area around and including the bite wound. This biopsy material was then finely ground and plated on a sensitive bacteriological medium. Some mice upon which biopsies were performed nevertheless contracted plague and died. This must lead to the conclusion that an infective flea may deposit organisms directly into the capillaries and that the primary stage of infection resulting from a flea bite is frequently bacteraemia.

The Ehrenfeucht Conjecture [5] states that if Μ is a finitely generated free monoid with nonempty subset S, then there is a finite subset T⊂S (a “test set”) such that given two endomorphisms f and g on Μ, f and g agree on S if and only if they agree on T. In[4], the authors prove that the above conjecture is equivalent to the following conjecture: a system of equations in a finite number of unknowns in Μ is equivalent to a finite subsystem. Since a finitely generated free monoid embeds naturally into the free group with the same number of generators, it is natural to ask whether a free group of finite rank has the above property on systems of equations. A restatement of the question motivates the following.

Waveguide prism-coupling methods were used to measure the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of AlxGa1-xN films grown on sapphire substrates by HVPE and MOCVD. Several discrete wavelengths ranging from 442 nm to 1064 nm were used and the results were fit to one-term Sellmeier equations. The maximum standard uncertainty in the refractive index measurements was ± 0.005 and the maximum standard uncertainty in the self-consistent calculation for film thickness was ± 15 nm. Analysis of normal-incidence spectroscopic transmittance and reflectance measurements, correlated with the prism-coupling results, was used to determine the ordinary refractive index as a continuous function of wavelength from the band gap wavelength of each sample (between 252 nm and 364 nm) to 2500 nm. The Al compositions of the samples were determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS). HVPE grown samples had compositions x = 0.279, 0.363, 0.593, and 0.657. MOCVD samples had x = 0.00, 0.419, 0.507, 0.618, 0.660, and 0.666. The maximum standard uncertainty in the absolute EDS-determined value for x was ± 0.02.

In this paper we show that any system of equations over a free nilpotent group of class c is either unitary or miliary. In fact, such a system either has a most general solution (akin to the most general solution of a system of linear dipohantine equations), or every solution has a proper generalization. In principle we provide an algorithm for determining whether or not a most general solution exists, and exhibiting it if it does.

Spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence (CL) images and spatially resolved CL spectra were obtained from two specimens grown by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. Each specimen consisted of a large number of unconnected diamond particles with cubo-octahedral and pseudo-fivefold twinned growth habits. The growth temperature was nominally 600 °C for one specimen and 750 °C for the other. In the 1.5–3.5 eV range, the spectra are composed of four defect and impurity related bands: there are three bands with zero-phonon lines at 1.68 eV, 2.156 eV, and 2.325 eV, and one broad band centered at 2.85 eV. A weak peak at 5.27 eV, due to exciton recombination, was also observed. Spectrally resolved images of the two most intense CL bands, at 2.156 eV and 2.85 eV, were obtained for several particles. In the low-temperature specimen, bright regions in images of the 2.156 eV band are correlated with {111} facets; bright regions in images of the 2.85 eV band are correlated in some cases with the central regions of {100} facets and in other cases with {111} facets. In the intermediate-temperature specimen, bright regions in the images of both bands are correlated with {100} facets. A model of competing recombination at different types of CL centers and nonradiative centers is proposed to facilitate the interpretation of the experimental results. For the low-temperature specimen, the model suggests that the 2.156 eV CL centers are located primarily in {111} growth sectors and the 2.85 eV CL centers are distributed relatively uniformly; images of the two dominant CL bands are predicted to have a complementary relationship in particles where there are few competing nonradiative centers. For the intermediate-temperature specimens, the model suggests that nonradiative recombination is dominant, and that the CL image contrast arises primarily from a nonuniform distribution of nonradiative centers.

Raman spectra were taken of 48 polycrystalline diamond films grown by hot-filament and microwave-plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and one gem-quality diamond, and characterized by fitting the spectra to a model line shape function. The line shape function contains three components: a narrow symmetric line at ∼1333 cm−1, the Raman line of diamond; a band centered at ∼1525 cm−1 ascribed to sp2-bonded carbon; and a broad background due to photoluminescence (PL). Four spectral parameters were observed to change from one specimen to another in an interrelated manner: (1) the linewidth of the diamond Raman line, which varies from ∼3 to ∼25 cm−1; (2) the intensity in the tails of the diamond Raman line, several halfwidths away from the peak; (3) the peak intensity ratio of the sp2-bonded carbon band to the diamond Raman line, which varies from ∼0 to ∼1; and (4) the intensity ratio of the PL background to the diamond Raman peak, which varies from ∼0.03 to ∼9. We suggest that the interrelated changes in the Raman spectra are due to changes in the abundance of sp2-bonded defect structures within the diamond crystallites. Polynuclear aromatic clusters are a possible model for these defect structures. Differences in film morphology, which were observed by SEM imaging, appear to be correlated with the changes in the Raman spectra. The peak position of the diamond Raman line is shifted to higher wave number in the CVD-grown films than in the gem, by as much as 3 cm−1, but this shift is not correlated with the other changes in the Raman spectra. As a function of deposition conditions, the defect-related features of the Raman spectra generally increase with increasing methane concentration or substrate temperature, and decrease with increasing oxygen concentration. A cyclic dependence of the defect-related features on deposition time is observed for one set of films grown by hot-filament CVD.
